The produce of the month of September is a favorite of mine, strawberries. These delicious berries are nutrient dense and low in calories. 100g gives you around 32 calories. Gut health is so important and per 100g strawberries will give you 2g of dietary fiber. The polyphenols and prebiotic fiber present in strawberries will help to feed your health promoting microbes. When these microbes are fed and kept alive and healthy, they promote health to almost every part of your body from brain function to optimizing your immune system function.

Key vitamins and minerals in strawberries includes potassium which helps to lower your blood pressure and helps to keep your heart healthy. Also, vitamin C which promotes an optimal immune system function and is also needed to make the protein collagen. Vitamin B9 or folate which is needed to make and repair your DNA. Fourthly, manganese, which helps metabolize protein, carbohydrates, and cholesterol. Also, plays important roles in reducing inflammation in your body, creating new bone and normal blood clotting.

Strawberries are so versatile you can use them in summer salads, in desserts, smoothies, as part of your baking in muffins or on top of a Corn Thins slices with some cream cheese. Make sure strawberries are on your shopping list for this month.
